Fiction and Human Rights Network develops new interdisciplinary tutorials

The work of the Fiction and Human Rights Network has given rise to teaching in this interdisciplinary field for the first time in Oxford's history. This term, four registered Visiting Students from the USA are taking tutorials in a course on 'Fiction and Human Rights' devised by the network co-founder, Tessa Roynon.
The students are (pictured from left to right) are: Ruby Shao (Princeton University / Hertford College, Oxford); Rachel Wilson (Macalester College / St Catherine's College, Oxford); Elisabeth Mayer (Scripps College / St Catherine's College, Oxford); and Abe Kenmore (Guilford College / Hertford College, Oxford).
The syllabus examines texts ranging from Twain's 'Huckleberry Finn' through Edwidge Danticat's 'Krik? Krak!' to Han Kang's 'Human Acts' and Hassan Blasim's 'The Madman of Freedom Square'. Students are analysing these in light of the scholarship of Joseph Slaughter, Stephen Clingman, Elizabeth Anker , James Dawes and others in the Fiction and Human Rights field.
