Each year, the Tate selects one item from its collections for in-depth academic evaluation, and Thomas Gainsborough’s 1750 portrait, Peter Darnell Muilman, Charles Crokatt and William Keable in a Landscape was the piece chosen for 2017. Dr Huw David (Rothermere American Institute), was invited to write the section titled "Patronage: Mercantile Sitters", alongside experts from the Courtauld Institute of Art, Gainsborough's House Museum, Royal College of Music and curators at the Tate itself. The piece has just been published online, where it is freely and publicly available. It can be viewed here.
