Reading Images Trinity Term 2017

The Ashmolean University Engagement Programme invites submissions for its ‘Reading Images’ workshop series to take place in Trinity Term 2017. Now in its second year, the series provides an exciting opportunity for graduates, postgraduates and early career fellows to present their
research to a multidisciplinary audience with the aid of prints, drawings and other objects from the Ashmolean Museum collection.

Whilst we encourage scholars with specialist knowledge of particular works of art to apply, we also welcome submissions from those for whom visual and material culture is a new research resource. We hope that this series will give scholars who do not normally work with visual material an opportunity to explore the rich holdings of the university museum and encourage engagement with the collections across as wide a disciplinary span as possible.

With the assistance of Dr Jim Harris (Andrew W Mellon Teaching Curator at the Ashmolean), we ask participants to select prints, drawings and objects from the collection, which illustrate or complement an aspect of their research. In each of our four, fortnightly
workshops, participants then present a 30-minute paper, followed by an open discussion of their topic and the works of art presented.

For Trinity 2017 we also invite pairs of researchers from different disciplines to speak about shared or complementary research interests eg. a psychology researcher working on bereavement and an art historian working on art and death. If you are interested in collaborating with another researcher but as yet have no one in mind, please let us know and we will do our best to find a suitable partner.

Please send a brief proposal (max. 250 words) by Wednesday 12 April 2017. If you do not have a particular work in mind or are unsure of the kinds of works held within the Ashmolean collection, please state this in your application and we will arrange a museum visit to discuss possibilities. All applications should be sent to emily.knight@trinity.ox.ac.uk and jim.harris@ashmus.ox.ac.uk

Conveners:
Dr Jim Harris (Andrew W Mellon Teaching Curator at the Ashmolean)
