TORCH Goes Digital! Writing

“Words … are full of echoes, of memories, of associations—naturally. They have been out and about, on people's lips, in their houses, in the streets, in the fields, for so many centuries. And that is one of the chief difficulties in writing them today—that they are so stored with meanings, with memories, that they have contracted so many famous marriages … How can we combine the old words in new orders so that they survive, so that they create beauty, so that they tell the truth? That is the question. And the person who could answer that question would deserve whatever crown of glory the world has to offer. Think what it would mean if you could teach, if you could learn, the art of writing”.

– Virginia Woolf, “Craftmanship.”

Working with the great wealth of material created by the incredible researchers at the University of Oxford and beyond, the TORCH Team has curated a brilliant programme of blog posts, podcasts, news articles, poems, performances and more on the theme of writing for you to enjoy.

This week, we will be considering questions such as:

  • What is so important about interdisciplinarity and co-authorship?
  • How can literature function as a way of mourning and healing?
  • How is a poem like a mushroom?

Remember, we are happy to consider content submissions related to this theme, be it a poem, artwork, blog post, or book review!

Unleash your creativity, and send your suggestions and content to torch@humanities.ox.ac.uk.
