Can Philosophy be Therapy?

The Oxford Phenomenology Network are hosting a lecture discussing whether 'Can Philosophy Be Therapy?' with Dr Christine Lopes. The talk will address two ways of answering the question of whether philosophy can be therapy: the linguistic and the phenomenological way. For the former I consider the later Wittgenstein’s comparison of philosophical methods to therapy, and for the latter I consider the phenomenological approach to therapy in psychiatry and psychology. In the first case, a recent exegetical article by Benjamin De Mosel (2015) is chosen over competing interpretations of Wittgenstein’s view of philosophy as therapy, while in the second case the choice of literature is a highly instructive book by Broome, Harland, Owen, and Stringaris (2012). Fully anonymised clinical cases are used in the talk to discuss the appeal of the linguistic and the phenomenological ways of seeing philosophy as therapy.
