The Oxford Queer Studies Research Network are delighted to welcome Professor Michael Bronski to Oxford for our first event of Michaelmas 2018. Michael Bronski is Professor of the Practice in Media and Activism in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Harvard University. He has been involved with LGBT politics since 1969 as an activist, organizer, writer, publisher, editor, and independent scholar.
Professor Bronski will be giving a lecture at the Rothermere American Institute in 1st Week at 10.10.

The impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and early 1990s on the arts was tremendous. Nowhere was this more manifest than in publishing. The need to document the growing epidemic and its effect on diverse communities, in nonfiction and novels was imperative. Yet, at the outset authors, editors, and publishers were ill-equipped to grapple with the immediate and long-term effects of the crisis on the industry and a gay male readership who were desperate for these representations, even as they were overwhelmed by the epidemic and often needed distance. The diverse approaches taken by trade and small press publishers, facing many obstacles, slowly, but ultimately produced a substantial, body of literature that was to influence both individual lives, community practices, and social policy.
