Oxford Medieval Society Seminar

Oxford Medieval Society

PLEASE NOTE: The date has changed to Thursday 27 February 2020, 6.30pm

Oxford Medieval Society is pleased to announce its Hilary Term Seminar, 'The European-ness of Middle English Literature: A Conversation'. The event will consist of a dialogue between two esteemed scholars working on the relationship between English and European literatures in the Middle Ages: Professor Marion Turner and Dr. Philip Knox. Marion Turner (Jesus College, Oxford) has published widely on late medieval literature and history: her most recent book, Chaucer: A European Life (2019), published by Princeton University Press, explores the places and spaces through which Chaucer moved and which may have influenced his writing. This monograph was reviewed as 'beguiling' (Evening Standard), 'magisterial' (The Telegraph), and 'a compass that allows readers to traverse Chaucer’s London and Europe' (TLS). Philip Knox's (Cambridge University) work also focuses on how the literature of fourteenth-century England interacts with literature from mainland Europe. He has published on Chaucer, Jean de Meun and the Roman de la Rose tradition, and is currently preparing a monograph which considers the reception of this poem in medieval England.

All are welcome to join for an engaging discussion about the connections (and disconnections) between England and Europe, still being felt particularly keenly today. Drinks will be provided, and members are welcome to accompany the speakers for dinner after the seminar. Please notify colleen.curran@ccc.ox.ac.uk if you would like to join for dinner.
