Professor Daniel Grimley: 'Delius in the Garden'

pict

Professor Daniel Grimley will talk about 'Delius in the Garden', based on his new book. His interest is Music and Landscape, with particular reference to Nordic and early twentieth-century British music. He is especially interested in the interdisciplinary connections between Music and Cultural Geography. In August 2011 he was scholar-in-residence at the Bard Music Festival, NY State.

Frederick Delius (1862-1934) was fascinated by gardens: he and his wife, the painter Jelka Rosen, maintained a fine garden behind their house in the artists’ colony of Grez-sur-Loing, south of Paris, and gardens influenced many of Delius’s compositions. This paper looks at the relationship between gardens, Delius’s music, and contemporary debates in garden design, especially the work of Gertrud Jekyll.

As always, if anyone would like to offer a lunchtime talk, film, reading, musical performance, or anything else relevant to our continuing ‘Landscapes and Identities’ theme, please do get in touch with Allison Adler Kroll. Especially welcome would be contributions on ‘Humanities and Sciences’.
