Join us for our Reading Group on Édouard Louis (ahead of the event with him on May 31) on the 9th of May 2023 at 4pm, in the TORCH Seminar Room.
Discussion Materials:
1) En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule (2014) / The End of Eddy (2017, trans. by Michael Lucey)
2) Studio B, Unscripted: with Ken Loach and Édouard Louis
Of course, any of Louis’ books can inform our conversation. Complete or expert knowledge of Louis’ work is not necessary to participate in the reading group. The idea is that the reading group will lay the groundwork for an event and a dialogue with Édouard Louis which will quickly open up to the public, trying to create a participatory and inclusive discussion which will probe the potential and political stakes of queer art in our lives.
Questions and topics we would be keen to explore involve –but are not limited to– the following:
* Insults and genealogies of violence
* The intersections of structures of sexual domination with class and racial oppression
* The aesthetics of (un/making) the queer self, queer communities, and queer politics towards societal transformation
* The return of the author, autofiction, and the author as an activist and social media figure
