“Reimagining Migrant Narratives” 14th-15th May 2020 - Oxford, UK

Submission Deadline: 23rd March 2020

The Oxford Migration Studies Society and TORCH Migration and Mobility Network invite academics, researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders to present original research, case studies or empirical insights at the University of Oxford during the conference “Reimagining Migration Narratives” which will take place on the 14th-15th May 2020 in Oxford, UK.

Conference Objectives & Themes

The conference will focus on explaining, comparing and unpacking the stories that surround refugees, migrants and migration. In light of the power of narratives in shaping refugee and migrant lives, migration policies, and the ways we think about migration, the conference “Reimagining Migration Narratives” aims to critically (1) de-construct and re-construct contemporary representations and discourses surrounding refugees, migrants and migration in different sectors ranging from academia and media to policy, to name a few; (2) examine theoretical and methodological questions related to the production and silencing of narratives about migration within academia and beyond, and (3) reflect on whose stories and which kinds of stories are legitimised as well as on the power of storytelling and the arts in challenging existing discourses and crafting new narratives.

For the conference on the 14th and 15th May 2020, we invite 10-15-minutes presentations that speak to the broader conference theme and that are related to at least one of the subtopics presented below:

  • Representations & Identity
