Women, Authorship, and Identity in the Long Eighteenth-Century: New Methodologies

RESCO logo

The RECSO TORCH network are hosting an event on 'Women, Authorship, and Identity in the Long Eighteenth Century: New Methodologies'.

Keynote: Susanne Kord (UCL)

This conference will investigate the problems that arise around questions of authority and authorship in women’s writing in the long eighteenth century, not just with regard to literature, but also in fields such as music, philosophy, and science. Over the past several decades, scholars have rediscovered an extensive corpus of women’s writing as well as the extent of women’s participation in political transformations like the French Revolution. But current young scholars are faced with important challenges in designing their own methodologies for approaching eighteenth-century women. The kind of questions that this conference will consider include how to move beyond the now-traditional narratives of female empowerment and disempowerment, and those of women as potentially subversive commentators on gender norms, and if we can escape 'biographism' as an approach to women's writing.
