CANCELLED: YOUNG REMBRANDT: Ashmolean After Hours

Young Rembrandt, a landmark exhibition at the Ashmolean explores the early years of the career of the most famous of all Dutch artists, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). Beginning with his earliest known paintings, prints and drawings made in the mid-1620s, and ending at the moment he rockets to stardom in Amsterdam in the mid-1630s. TORCH will once again be collaborating with the Ashmolean for a special After Hours Event on Friday 24th April 2020. Join us for an evening celebrating Rembrandt and Dutch culture.

A full event programme for the evening will be announced shortly including bite-sized talks, activities, tours and performances. Confirmed events so far are highlighted below.

Confirmed Performance: Skeleton Crew Concert

We are delighted to announce that the After Hours event will include a performance by Skeleton Crew.

Skeleton Crew is an Early Music band of Oxford musicians, performing medieval, renaissance and baroque music. Their instruments include recorders, baroque flute, lute, theorbo, 'cello, harp and harpsichord.

Their aim is to show modern audiences how enjoyable Early Music can be, and have fun exploring a range of pieces from several centuries and countries. They perform a range of events around Oxfordshire, for public and private occasions, including those for charity.

Confirmed Talk: Rembrandt and Orange
6pm–7pm, tickets required £8/£7/£6 – via Ashmolean Museum

With Christiaan Vogelaar, Curator of Old Master Paintings and Sculpture, Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, Netherlands. Learn about the young Rembrandt's rise to fame. A major breakthrough happened when the Prince of Orange, Frederick Henry, began to commission works from the artist, some of which are on display in the Young Rembrandt exhibition and are considered Rembrandt’s first masterpieces.

This walking tour is run by doctoral students from the University of Oxford. The goal is to discuss the collections of the museum with a critical eye - highlighting uncomfortable space, origins, and content. The tour is free to attend, but booking is essential.
