Rethinking the Human(ties) in a Time of Planetary Catastrophe
Tuesday 4 March 2025, 4.30pm
Colin Matthew Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building
All Welcome
Hear from selected experts and practitioners and join the discussion on what the Humanities can contribute to interdisciplinary approaches to environmental problems, from the climate crisis to mass extinction.
We are delighted to be joined by:
Alex Lawrence:
“From Languages to Land Use: Getting a foothold in forestry post-PhD”
Alex is a writer, walker and environmentalist. Having completed his PhD thesis on the cultural 'lives' of the toucan in early modern Europe, he now works for the Forestry Commission as a policy writer and regulatory reformer. He is passionate about woodland management and alternative approaches to land use, and can often be found felling, coppicing and ride-clearing in the woods of Somerset at the weekend.
Khem Rogaly:
“Why use History in climate policy? Reflections on the humanities in practice”
Khem Rogaly is a Senior Research Fellow at the thinktank Common Wealth, where he researches Britain’s military industry, its political economy and its responsibilities for climate crisis. Khem has also worked in policy research at E3G and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. His academic background is in History, and he is interested in the potential role of the discipline in climate policy.
